Overview of Services
Pet adoption
With thousands of dogs and cats entering our shelter every year, there is no better place to find a new furry companion than at the Humane Society of Yuma. We currently have pets available for adoption at both our shelter and at the Yuma Palms PetSmart. Find out more on our adoption page.
Animal control
The Humane Society of Yuma has contracts with the City of Yuma, Somerton, and Yuma County to provide animal control services to their jurisdictions.
PICKING UP STRAY DOGS |
If you see or pick up a stray dog, call the Humane Society immediately. Please do not approach any animal that seems aggressive or scared. If you have lost a dog, please visit the Humane Society during shelter hours. Do not call, we will not ID pets over the phone. If you have a dog in your custody for over 6 days, the dog is considered yours. We do not pick up cats since there is no law against free-roaming cats. We do, however, receive cats as they are brought into us. We also have live cat traps available to be checked out. Back to top |
INVESTIGATES CRUELTY COMPLAINTS |
It is illegal to beat, torment, hurt or otherwise harm any animal in any manner. People who cause an animal to suffer pain can be charged with a crime. HSOY Officers are here to enforce the government codes that protect the animals in our community. If you suspect animal cruelty please call the Humane Society immediately. Back to top |
DECEASED ANIMAL REMOVAL |
Our officers will pick up deceased animals from public property. If you see a deceased animal, wild or domestic, call the Humane Society immediately. Back to top |
BARKING COMPLAINTS |
It is unlawful for an animal to bark, howl, cry or disturb the peace of your neighbors. If you have a barking dog that is disturbing the peace in your neighborhood you can report barking to the Humane Society of Yuma's Dispatch. Any barking complaints after hours and weekends will be reported to our answering service and an Animal Control Officer will make contact with you. Animal Control Officers will not make contact with any person(s) after 10:00 p.m. The reporting party has the right to have the Animal Control Officer speak to the owner or to fill out a witness statement; this makes it possible for the Animal Control Officer to issue a citation on the behalf of the reporting party. Please note that as the reporting party you can be summoned into court to testify against the owner(s). For more information please contact the Patrol Division Supervisor, Sergeant Aaron Acton, at 782-1621 |
Licensing, vaccinations and microchipping clinics
LICENSING |
It is the law in Arizona to have any animal over 3 months vaccinated for rabies. A license is required by Yuma County . The license is good for the entire calendar year and can only be purchased after the rabies vaccination. The license purchase will also help your pet find his/her way home if lost. Please bring your rabies certificate in when looking for your lost dog. Visit our licensing page. Back to top |
MICROCHIPPING |
Microchip identification will be administered to all dogs adopted from the facility. Microchips are also available to the general public at the shelter on dates shown on the calendar of events (see home page) for a fee of $20 for both dogs and cats. Back to top |
VACCINATIONS |
We offer vaccinations at our spay/neuter clinic Tuesday through Friday from 11am - 2pm. As part of our public service, we provide weekly rabies vaccinations during the first three months of the year. January - March the HSOY will provide mobile rabies and licensing clinics in various areas throughout Yuma County. Please refer to our calendar of events for scheduled clinics. Back to top |
