Kitten Season is Coming

Kitten season is the time of year when cats give birth to litters of kittens that flood our local animal shelter. It normally starts early spring, peaks in summer and ends in the fall and the Humane Society of Yuma struggles to try and save as many as possible.

The reason we have such an influx is because of so many cats in the community not spayed or neutered and trying to save every kitten is almost an impossible task. There are ways that you can help the Humane Society of Yuma out:

  1. If you have a cat that gets out please have them spayed or neutered if they are not all ready.
  2. If you see any young kittens do not touch or move them, mother cats often leave for hours at a time to search for food or new shelter. The mother might also be scared by your presence and keeping kittens with their mother is the best chance at survival.
  3. Last is our Trap-Neuter-Release program (http://www.hsoyuma.com/feline-friends.html.) If you are feeding any feral cat colonies or know of any the HSOY Feline Friends can help out. The TNR program is a method of managing feral cat colonies humanely and effectively. Feral cats are trapped in humane cages using food as bait, they are then spayed or neutered and released where they were originally trapped. This prevents the feral cats from reproducing and when the caretaker removes and/or TNRs any newly arrived cats, the population stabilizes and gradually declines over time.

Following these simple instructions will help the Humane Society of Yuma out in our mission to try and save one until there are none. Other ways to help the shelter include:

Donating kitten food specifically (Fancy Feast Kitten Tender Turkey Feast) and newborn kitten nursing bottles.

You can always donate monetarily through our Facebook page's donate button or on our Classy Fundraising page at https://give.classy.org/kittenseasonprep

We will also be needing the help of active and ready fosters for the incoming litters. You can learn more about fostering by clicking here. There will be a Kitten Foster Meeting and Training on the April 10th, 6:00 PM at the main shelter conference room. This event is open to the public, to both new and existing foster volunteers.

We're counting on your help, Yuma. Kitten Season is coming!
