The Humane Society of Yuma has a long standing partnership with the Arizona Department of Corrections. The Humane Society of Yuma employs inmates Monday through Friday to clean the facility, do laundry, clean dishes and to feed the animals. This program is essential to the Humane Society of Yuma; the inmates provide labor that would otherwise be too costly to employ at a regular rate. “Being a non-profit, it would be practically impossible for us to actually hire this many people.  The inmate program allows us to keep our employee costs down while never jeopardizing the care of the animals we house” says Annette Lagunas, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Yuma. Although the working inmate program is available at other non-profit organizations and locations, working at the Humane Society of Yuma is in high demand at the prison.  “This program is one of many different opportunities that we (Arizona Department of Corrections) offer to help the inmate rehabilitate and give back to the community. The partnership we have with the Humane Society of Yuma has been beneficial for the prison, inmates and the Yuma County Community.  It provides a positive learning experience for the inmates and contributes to the community by helping some of our most vulnerable members.” – Carla Hacker-Agnew, Warden for the  Arizona Department of Corrections.

As the HSOY Rescue team arrived at the shelter around 6:00 am Thursday morning they noticed something by the front door at the main entrance of the Humane Society of Yuma. Once they got close enough they realized that it was a dog that had been tied to the front door of the shelter and left sometime in the middle of the night. They immediately jumped into action, slowly approaching the dog which is a Pit Bull and not yet knowing if he was nice or not. Once the volunteers got close enough they realized that he was as sweet as they come and just wanted some help. They then took him into a kennel, provided him with food, water, a bed, a warm blanket and he is now in the care to the Humane Society of Yuma.  If you have any information about the owners of this dog please contact the shelter as soon as possible. 928-782-1621

The Humane Society of Yuma kicked off their BeHumane Educational Program this week by visiting Alice Byrne Elementary and educating the students about what it means to BEHUMANE. HSOY staff members visited every class with a pet and went over how to properly care for an animal and the differences between animal cruelty and abuse. "It is important that we start teaching Humane Education in grade school.  All of the lessons we teach in the classroom pertain to animal safety and treating animals, and people with respect." Said Annette Lagunas the Executive Director for the Humane Society of Yuma. Alice Byrne Elementary raised over $2000 in donations from friends and family of the students for the general care of the homeless pets at the Yuma shelter. The top earners received some pretty amazing prizes donated by our friends at BOSE including ear buds, Bluetooth speakers and some HSOY gear.

The St. Francis Assisi School held a pet food drive and encouraged all of it's students to find it in their hearts to donate pet food to the Humane Society of Yuma. Today two staff members from the Humane Society of Yuma appeared at St. Francis and was amazed at how many donations they received. The students were more than happy to personally hand their own donations to the staff members, and by the end of it the staff members barley had enough room in the vehicle to get them back to the shelter.
