Licensing your dog

Monthly rabies clinics second Saturday of every month from 8am to 10am at the shelter,.

All dogs three months or older residing in Yuma County must be licensed with the Humane Society of Yuma. The license verifies that your dog is current with his/her rabies vaccination.

  • If your dog has been vaccinated, you will need a valid rabies vaccination certificate. A valid certificate must be signed by a U.S. licensed veterinarian and state whether your dog is altered or not. Your veterinarian will provide you with a certificate at the time of vaccination. Once you have a certificate, you can license your dog online.
  • License online

  • If your dog needs to be vaccinated, the Humane Society of Yuma holds a number of rabies clinics at locations around the county for your convenience.

To obtain a temporary resident license, come to our shelter during normal business hours with proof of temporary residency.

Late fees - A late fee will be added to any license purchased after March 31st. Late fees are $4 per mont accrued at the first of each month beginning on April 1st. This fee structure was set by the Yuma County Board of Supervisors.

Exceptions

Late fees waived

  • If you have owned your dog for fewer than thirty days, late fees are waived
  • If you have resided in Yuma County for fewer than thirty days.

Late fees incementally reduced

  • It is the law that all puppies older than three months of age have a rabies vaccination and summarily licensed. Upon turning three months old, you have thirty days to license your puppy. A late fee of $4 a month will begin accruing the first of the month following the puppy's fourth month of age. We do not offer online licensing for this exception at this time. If you believe you are qualified to receive this reduced fee structure, you must visit our shelter.

Why license?

  • It’s the Law. Yuma County requires all dogs three months and older be licensed. The license verifies that your dog is current with his/her rabies vaccination.
  • A licensed dog who gets loose and picked up by a humane officer can often be reunited with its family without having to be in our shelter, whereas an unlicensed dog may have to stay 48 hours until you are allowed to bring it home.
  • A licensed dog who bites someone can often return home for a period of ‘home quarantine,’ whereas an unlicensed dog must stay confined at our shelter for at least ten days.
  • A licensed dog is guaranteed a longer stay at our shelter. Unlicensed dogs are guaranteed for only three days while licensed dogs are kept a minimum of six days.
  • A dog license ensures that your dog is vaccinated and protected against rabies. A rabid dog puts your family’s and the public’s health at risk.

Rabies vaccinations.

In order to be licensed, your dog must be current with his/her rabies vaccination through 2009.

  • Rabies certificate must state whether animal is altered or not and will be the sole determiner of a dog’s licensing fee (e.g. altered or unaltered) .
