Fostering a pet

Fostering a pet saves lives. Foster care is administered by volunteers who open their homes to a shelter pet in order to;

  • Prevent contamination of young or medically vulnerable animals with infectious disease agents.
  • Provide continuous monitoring and administer care more often than shelter staff can reasonably perform.
  • Provide care for underage animals including, nursing mothers and babies, kittens and puppies without a mother, until their age and state of health permits their reentry into the shelter for adoption.
  • Provide training and socializing to improve their chances of adoption.
  • Provide a healing environment for animals that have just undergone surgery.
    and are healing prior to going to PETsMART or other off-site adoption
    Any other condition or circumstance which the Staff deem appropriate.

Fostering can be a rewarding experience but it also represents an extraordinary commitment of time and can be very taxing emotionally.

In order to foster a pet for the Humane Society of Yuma, you'll need to attend a general volunteer orientation class as well as additional classes specific to being a foster parent.

If you believe you are up to the challenge, you can email Shelter Manager Mike Foster for more information.
