NUMBER 9 IN ADOPTIONS IN THE NATION

The Humane Society of Yuma’s partnership with PetSmart Charities® Everyday Adoption Center is ranked #9 in adoptions among all PetSmart stores in the United States

Yuma, AZ, March 9, 2017– The Humane Society of Yuma is celebrating its partnership with PetSmart Charities, the leading funder of animal welfare in North America, and its continued success of its adoption program. Recently, the Humane Society of Yuma has achieved a major accomplishment of ranking number 9 in adoptions among all PetSmart stores in the United States in 2016.

Our partnership with PetSmart Charities has dramatically improved our lifesaving efforts at the shelter. Our adoption program has benefited not only from the foot-traffic at the Everyday Adoption Center at the PetSmart store in Yuma, but also through many of the grants our organization has received from PetSmart Charities in the past few years. – Lana Shapiro, Director of Development.

Since 2012, the Humane Society of Yuma has seen a 52.7 percent increase in adoptions, with a total of 2,799 adoptions in 2016 alone. In the past few years, the main increase is due to the close relationship the organization has built with PetSmart Charities. This amazing stride has been possible by utilizing the Everyday Adoption Center at the PetSmart store in Yuma, participating in PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend events, integrating the foster care program with the EAC and all the lifesaving grant funding provided by PetSmart Charities.

“At PetSmart Charities, our mission is to find lifelong, loving homes for pets in need and we could not do this without the hard work and dedication of animal welfare organizations like the Humane Society of Yuma,” said Steve Kaufman, center of excellence manager, adoptions at PetSmart Charities.  “Their success with pet adoptions is a true testament to their commitment to helping pets in need in their community.”

The Humane Society of Yuma’s mission is to reduce the number of homeless pets through rescue, adoption and spay/neuter programs; PetSmart Charities and the local Yuma community has been instrumental in making this possible. Without the collaboration with the local community who sought out adoption versus the other options of breeding and purchasing from breeders. Lifesaving efforts made by the Humane Society of Yuma continues to improve year after year, but the fight isn’t over. While the rescue and adoption programs that the Humane Society of Yuma provides focuses on the outcomes of the animals; it is imperative to also recognize the preventative measures the Humane Society of Yuma takes to reunite pets with their families through microchip implantations and licensing, the 4 Paws Pantry (low-income supplemental pet food distribution), the Trap, Neuter, Release (AKA TNR program/Feline Friends) and most importantly the community’s low-cost spay/neuter program. In 2016, the Humane Society of Yuma cared for over 8,100 animals (a slight decrease from 2015, yet HSOY dealt with 126 cats involved in three suspected animal hoarding cases in 2016).

When addressing the reduction of homeless pets in Yuma, we don’t just celebrate the outcomes made possible by PetSmart Charities, the rescue program and the community, but also continue to work on the preventative programs that will help reduce the number of pets coming through the doors of the Humane Society of Yuma.
